Apple replaces screws on iPhone 4

Published

Apparently Apple has been at work trying to stop people from taking apart their iPhone 4 (probably to prevent the use of the white color conversion kit). According to some reports, some folks who sent their phones for servicing had the phones return with different screws in place instead of the traditional cross screw that was used for the phone at launch. The new screws at first glance look like a regular Torx screw that is commonly used in certain devices nowadays. But upon closer inspection, instead of the 6 sided “star” used in regular Torx screws, the screw has 5 sided “star” instead. This uncommon sort of screw has been proven extremely difficult to remove, as proven by the guys at ifixit who tried to remove the MacBook Air battery that was secured with these types of screws as well. If you’re planning on modifying your iPhone 4, remember to do it before any servicing or you’ll have some trouble removing the special screws Apple are currently using.
