According to Samsung Canada, via Facebook, the Galaxy S variants in the country will receive an upgrade to Android 2.2, more widely known as Froyo in mid-December. Both Bell Canada with its Samsung Vibrant model and Rogers with its Samsung Captivate model–both are variants of the Galaxy S product line–will be updated in mid-December while the CDMA-based Samsung Fascinate from Canadian carrier Telus will get the upgrade early in 2011. The upgrade is provided because of “tremendous interest.”

News of Canadian models getting their Galaxy S upgraded to Android 2.2 Froyo bodes well for the U.S. market and perhaps Samsung will release the upgrade in the U.S. around the same time frame. The Bell model of the Samsung Vibrant is offered through T-Mobile in the U.S. while the Captivate on Rogers is also carried by AT&T; Telus, the CDMA carrier, shares the Fascinate with Verizon Wireless. Of the four major U.S. carriers with the Galaxy S variants, Sprint is the only one offering the unique Samsung Epic 4G with its slide-out keyboard.

Despite the upgrade to Android 2.2 Froyo, Samsung’s Galaxy S may still be behind as Google is getting ready to launch Android 2.3, also known as Gingerbread.
