Android 1.5 Update Arrives

Android 1.5 Update Arrives

T-Mobile G1 users are busy reporting that the Android Cupcake 1.5 update has been pushed out by T-Mobile, so by now most G1 users are busy playing with the new virtual keyboard, along with other updates that are included. The bad news is that customized ROMs can hinder the G1’s ability to receive this update, so if you’re on a non-official ROM, then you’ll need to put it back to the original ROM (which shouldn’t be too hard), and you’re well on your way to getting the latest 1.5 update.

Strong Year For Android

Sure it’s the global economic crisis, and everybody’s having problems, but Google’s CEO, Eric Schmidt, is predicting some good times for Google’s Android platform. In the company’s first quarter investors’ conference, Schmidt said that he expects a very strong year for Android, which is certainly good news for readers and users too. It will be interesting to see the developments for Android, as the year goes along.

Documents To Go For Android Released

It looks like the iPhone won’t be the only phone getting more document support these few days, as DataViz just has launched its Documents To Go for Android, and it will even allow editing and creating documents up to and including Office 2007. The price for the application is $29.99, but it’s currently going for a special offer of $19.99, just for the launch.

Google Android Tethering Allowed Now

Google Android Tethering Allowed Now

While Google did a mass sweep of the tethering applications on its Android Market a few days ago, it looks like the Internet giant has felt the pressure from various parties and has loosened up a bit. Instead of banning the app for everybody under the sun, they plan to make those applications available for “users outside the T-Mobile US network”. While this shows that Google has a system to filter apps based on what carrier you’re on, it’s unconfirmed whether such a feature is good or bad. The good news is that developers are free to come up with software, even if it goes against some carriers’ Terms of Service (ToS); the bad news is that if the carriers don’t like your app, it’s not going to get very much exposure. Do you think such a move is good from Google? A statement from Google (to the developer) reads:

“We inadvertently unpublished your application for all mobile providers; if you like, we can restore your app so that all Android Market users outside the T-Mobile US network will have access to your application”

Android Tethering Apps Pulled From Market

Android Tethering Apps Pulled From Market

It looks like there is some bad news for folks who like to tether their T-Mobile G1 to their laptops. Google has reportedly pulled the tethering apps from the Android Market. The reason behind this is supposedly because Google has agreements with carriers and T-Mobile’s terms of service do not allow tethering. One of the questions that folks ask of this move is what happens to folks who own an unlocked version of the G1, and might be on another carrier, especially if another carrier allows tethering? It would certainly be unfair to the user to be deprived of such a useful function, just because another carrier doesn’t agree with it.

Google Android Goes To Taiwan

Google Android Goes To Taiwan

Google has confirmed that it has set up a technical support team for its Android operating system over in Taiwan. The current support provided will be for mobile phones only and will not be extended to support low-cost netbooks. It’s good to see that Google is actively trying to support its mobile platform, and if it keeps up the good work, Windows Mobile and the iPhone will certainly have a tough fight on their hands.

Android To Overtake iPhone By 2012?

Android To Overtake iPhone By 2012?

Could you imagine a market where Google’s Android OS is more successfully than Apple’s iPhone? Well, according to the analysts over at Informa Telecoms & Media, this might actually be the case as early as 2012. A strong point that they’ve brought up is the hardware developers will be looking to open-sourced software as a way to cut costs during the manufacturing process. Overtake the iPhone? Currently it certainly sounds like a lofty goal, but it certainly might be possible, considering the number of manufacturers who are looking to take up Google’s Android platform.

Windows Mobile Marketplace Logo

Windows Mobile Marketplace Logo

Microsoft bashing is almost a common sport nowadays, so it really isn’t too much of a surprise to hear of people laughing at the design of what is rumored to be the logo for the upcoming Windows Marketplace for Windows Mobile. A quick glance at it and most people will think it looks strikingly similar to the logo used by Google for its Android Marketplace, just a little more boring. What do you think of this logo design? Good or bad?

Skins For Your Google Android Emulator

Want your Android Emulator to look a little more like the device you’re trying to get the problem to run on? Well, you’ll be fairly happy to hear that you can download skins for your Google Android Emulator. Some of the devices up for selection include the Palm Treo Pro, Motorola Q, HTC Magic or even the Kogan Agora. Sure, it doesn’t serve any real purpose, but it might help you see how your program looks like on another device.

Android Browser Flaw

Android Browser Flaw

Security issues always crop up in phones one way or the other, and this time, it’s Android’s turn. Folks have discovered that there is a flaw in Android’s browser multimedia subsystem, which is quite serious as security folks are even advising customers to avoid using it altogether. The most frustrating bit of this news is that the bug has already been fixed in the Android code trunk, just that an actual update has yet to be rolled out to G1 users yet.

Android Market Paid Apps Coming?

Android Market Paid Apps Coming?

Google’s Android Market isn’t doing to badly, though of course, it hasn’t had the effect like that of Apple’s App Store just yet. One thing that will help Google move the Android Market forwards will be the inclusion of paid applications, and if the recent rumors are to be believed, Google will be launching their paid app market later this week. Of course, there isn’t any official confirmation on this issue just yet, but since it won’t take long before we’re (happily) staring at the weekend again, it looks like we’ll find out the whole story rather soon.

O2 Germany Planning Up To 8 Android Phones

While there isn’t any official confirmation just yet, word is going around that O2 Germany are planning to launch 6 to 8 Android-powered handsets throughout the course of 2009. Google’s Android has been around for a while now, so it’s good to see that we’ll finally be getting that “second Android device” sooner rather than later. The more the merrier, of course.

Android Multi Touch Pulled Due To Apple?

Android Multi Touch Pulled Due To Apple?

By now, we all know that Google’s Android can support some form of multi-touch, as demonstrated by various parties online. So the million-dollar-question is “why didn’t Google put such a popular thing into its Android platform”? Well, considering that Apple has mentioned that it will defend its patents, Google might have been trying to avoid a potential clash with Apple, though if that’s the case, users will certainly be a little disappointed that Google made a conscious decision not to include such an exciting technology in. Speaking of Apple’s multi-touch, do you think they’ll be going after Palm, especially since the Palm Pre will have multi-touch support? Drop us a comment to let us know what you think.

Hacked New Firmware For Android

Hacked New Firmware For Android

Not too fond of the official firmware for your G1? Well, you could always try the custom firmware, JF, which has been recently updated to reflect the new features of the G1 RC-33 update. This custom firmware has features such as multi-touch, auto-rotate and some other goodies. One thing to note is that this custom firmware doesn’t include the radio update, which was deliberately left as a separate update. As usual, remember that flashing your phone to a custom firmware is a dangerous thing, so don’t blame us (or anybody else) if you accidentally brick your phone in the process.

Broadcom Chipset Supports Android

Broadcom Chipset Supports Android

Broadcom has announced that the software that controls its Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and FM combo solution is a standard component of Android. Android developers will have open access to portions of Broadcom’s combo drivers, which should give developers an early start in terms of developing devices and applications in the future. It’s good to see that Google’s Android is gaining momentum, not that we’re trying to say that it wasn’t popular before. We’re still waiting for that “second Android device” to be available.

Google Android Firmware RC33

Google Android Firmware RC33

It looks like users of T-Mobile’s G1 will be getting a new firmware update for their beloved Android-powered device. Word is out that T-Mobile will be rolling out a new firmware version for the device, which is version 1.1 RC33. This update will be pushed OTA (Over The Air), and will have several bug fixes, as well as a few new enhancements like the ability to use the Google Voice Search. This isn’t the coveted Cupcake update, so it looks like we’ll have to wait a while more for that. The good news is that this update should be available on February 15th.
