Do not Break QuickPwn
Posted on: Posted on April 3, 2009 10:05 AM

We recently posted about warring factions of iPhone hackers out there, which might be a good bit of drama for casual users, but the folks at the Dev Team have come out with a rather dire warning for those who are using an unofficial version of their iPhone jailbreak method. In their own words:
THE MOST IMPORTANT THING ABOUT THE UNOFFICIAL QUICKPWN RELEASES IS THAT IF YOU USE THEM, YOU WILL KILL YELLOWSN0W, POSSIBLY FOREVER. That’s because QuickPwn, by its very nature, requires you to already have accepted Apple’s official IPSW, along with its baseband update. If you do that, you will (possibly forever) lose your ability to software-unlock your iPhone 3G.

Upright App For Your iPhone
Posted on: Posted on March 30, 2009 11:19 AM

Honestly speaking, the number of innovative apps that are appearing on Apple’s iPhone is simply amazing. Next up on the innovative list of applications is the “Upright” app, which serves as a reminder when your body posture is compromised. If you’re not fond of your mother nagging at you not to slouch, then you probably wouldn’t like this app, but if you genuinely want a reminder to stand up straight, then feel free to check it out.

Zippo App For Your iPhone
Posted on: Posted on March 30, 2009 11:14 AM

Zippo and Moderati have announced that their free Virtual Zippo Lighter app for the iPhone has been downloaded over 3 million times since it was first released back in October, making it one of the most popular and prevalent branded applications in the App Store. It’s a simple app, but certainly one that you’ll probably download as soon as you get your hands on your iPhone. The average of 100,000 new downloads a week can’t be that far wrong, right?

Skype For iPhone And BlackBerry
Posted on: Posted on March 30, 2009 9:03 AM

We’ve all read about the recent rumors that Skype would be releasing an official client for the iPhone, and it looks like those rumors were accurate. Skype will be gearing up to launch its service on the iPhone come Tuesday. The icing on the cake is that not only will it be available for the iPhone, BlackBerry users will also get a piece of the pie. One of the more interesting points is that Skype on the iPhone will allow users to use the phone numbers which are directly available in the iPhone address book, saving the users from having to create duplicate lists.

Pop Bubble Wrap On Your iPhone
Posted on: Posted on March 27, 2009 9:54 AM

Whenever you unwrap something that has bubble wrap around it, you instinctively start to pop those bubbles on the bubble wrap, right? It’s something so simple and low-tech, but deep down, we all love it, and are probably addicted to it. The folks behind Mugen Pop Pop are certainly looking to harness that love, as they’ve now come up with an iPhone App that simulates just that. You’ll never have to worry about running out of bubble wrap now!

Skype Coming To The iPhone
Posted on: Posted on March 27, 2009 9:11 AM

With the CTIA tradeshow in Las Vegas just around the corner, speculation is mounting that Skype will be releasing an official client for the iPhone. Considering the undeniable popularity of Apple’s iPhone, it really isn’t too hard to believe that this bit of news is true. Skype has been mum on the issue, so you probably can expect to not receive any official word on this until next week’s CTIA. While Skype on the iPhone would certainly be well received, it does have one little restriction though, which is that it will only work on Wi-Fi networks, just like how Apple muscled that restriction on to Fring.

Posted on: Posted on March 25, 2009 10:42 AM

It’s certainly taken a long while, and we don’t have any official closure of the issue just yet, but it seems that China Unicom might have just pipped China Mobile in terms of vying to be the carrier for Apple’s insanely popular iPhone. A posting on China Unicom’s page shows the iPhone’s specs, so there is a strong indication that they’ll be getting the iPhone real soon.

iPhone Dominates Smartphone Data Traffic
Posted on: Posted on March 25, 2009 10:12 AM

Apple’s iPhone certainly is a good record-breaker, as it seems to keep rewriting all the rules. Now a recent survey from admob indicates that the popular cell phone has the largest share of the smartphone market, based on data traffic. If you’re looking for figures, the iPhone is responsible for 33% of all smartphone traffic, or 49.5% of the smartphone traffic in the US. Those are certainly phenomenal figures, considering that Apple’s iPhone hasn’t been around for more than a few years.

Need An iPhone Developer?
Posted on: Posted on March 23, 2009 8:19 AM
Got an idea for a killer iPhone app, but don’t have the technical know-how on how to realize your dream? Well, you could always go to iPhoneAppQuotes.com to get a free quote from up to 3 iPhone development companies, and from there you’ll be able to pick which one you like. This just goes to show how lucrative the whole mobile application industry (specifically the Apple App Store) has become. It’s quite interesting to see these agencies start to pop up to help people find iPhone developers, but when you think about it, it’s probably a logical evolution of the whole situation.

Posted on: Posted on March 16, 2009 8:10 AM

There is no official word on it yet, but Kevin Rose is expecting the upcoming iPhone 3.0 update to finally feature cut-and-paste. Kevin feels that the 3.0 update might even push the iPhone 3G to the Palm Pre’s level. Some may beg to differ as the Palm Pre has different hardware. We of course hope that Kevin is right, as he has been most times!

There will even be a launch event on March 21st, probably to rope in the Apple fans and iPhone fans. In terms of pricing, it won’t come cheap, as the device is rumored to be going for $800-$900 USD, which certainly isn’t simple lunch money.

Android To Overtake iPhone By 2012?
Posted on: Posted on March 10, 2009 11:01 AM

Could you imagine a market where Google’s Android OS is more successfully than Apple’s iPhone? Well, according to the analysts over at Informa Telecoms & Media, this might actually be the case as early as 2012. A strong point that they’ve brought up is the hardware developers will be looking to open-sourced software as a way to cut costs during the manufacturing process. Overtake the iPhone? Currently it certainly sounds like a lofty goal, but it certainly might be possible, considering the number of manufacturers who are looking to take up Google’s Android platform.

iPhone Prototype On eBay
Posted on: Posted on March 10, 2009 10:29 AM

We’re all fond of prototypes are they’re often quite cool, seeing that not many people have them. It seems that a couple of iPhone prototypes have found their way to eBay, and it’s clocking up a fair number of bids. As it’s a prototype, it has many flaws, mainly in terms of features. While you’re able to initiate and receive calls, there aren’t many other features within this prototype aside from the ability to receive text messages. Of course, if you’re flush enough to buy this, it’s certainly more for collection than actual use. That being said, the bidding for the device has topped $2,400 at time of writing, so it remains to be seen how much people will be willing to part with for this prototype of Apple’s iPhone.

Cydia To Challenge App Store?
Posted on: Posted on March 6, 2009 9:44 AM

Cydia has certainly been essential to the history of jailbreaking and the iPhone. Now the developer Jay Freeman is planning on turning it into a competitor to Apple’s App Store. It shouldn’t be too hard a job, as all he’d need to do is consolidate everything into a centralized payment service. Of course, Apple certainly won’t sit back and watch this unfold, therefore Freeman has already hired a lawyer, just in case the inevitable happens.

Would The iPhone Keep You At Verizon?
Posted on: Posted on March 4, 2009 4:46 PM

Is Verizon Wireless feeling blue that it doesn’t have an iPhone to offer to its subscribers? Well, based on some of the questions that are posed to its customers who are leaving the network; it’s certainly very conscious about how much Apple’s iPhone (or lack of it) has impacted its customer base. You can see from the screenshot that users are asked questions like “What could Verizon Wireless have offered to keep you as a customer?” Amongst the answers that are offered to users are the iPhone. We’ve heard of quite a few Verizon subscribers ditching the network and going to AT&T for the iPhone. What’s your take on this? Were you faced with the dilemma of switching networks to get the iPhone? Let us know what you think via the comments section.

iPhone Catches Fire While Charging?
Posted on: Posted on March 4, 2009 9:23 AM

It’s certainly not going to amuse Apple too much, but two reports have surfaced that might indicate that there is a risk of the iPhone possibly catching fire. An Italian blogger was charging his iPhone 3G, and after 3 hours, it sparked at caught fire at the base. A little research indicated that there was a Swedish handset doing the same thing back in 2008. This might actually get some people to start questioning how safe these devices are when they leave their handphones around to charge, it’s rather scary to think that they might catch fire suddenly.

Mac OS 7 On iPhone
Posted on: Posted on March 3, 2009 8:47 AM

It’s not something that you’d do to get more productivity out of your iPhone, but some savvy folks on the Internet have managed to get Mac OS 7 running on the iPhone, albeit via emulation. Considering the rising popularity of emulation software, it really shouldn’t be too much of a surprise to see this happen. Of course, Apple probably wouldn’t be too supportive of the whole thing, so don’t expect to see such a solution on the App Store anytime soon.

Speak Your SMS
Posted on: Posted on March 2, 2009 3:14 PM

Here’s a rather handy app for your iPhone that should be released fairly soon. ShoutOUT is the first voice-to-sms app for the iPhone, and is brought to you by Promptu. A lot of people aren’t fond of the iPhone’s virtual keyboard, which will certainly make typing long SMS messages a pain. This app allows you to dictate your message and correct the transcribed text if there are any errors, before sending it out. The people behind this app plan to extend it to any message type available on the iPhone such as email, Facebook status, Calendar and more.
