Baby Shaker App Controversy
Posted on: Posted on April 23, 2009 7:57 PM

Many developers have complained over the approval process of Apple’s AppStore, as many of them had to endure long periods of waiting, rejection and who knows what else. Now Apple is under fire for approving a rather controversial app, despite all its stringent checking. The Baby Shaker app has users shaking the phone till the baby has red crosses over its eyes, and it certainly going to be very offensive to many people. An Apple statement apologizing over the event reads:
"This application was deeply offensive and should not have been approved for distribution on the App Store. When we learned of this mistake, the app was removed immediately. We sincerely apologize for this mistake and thank our customers for bringing this to our attention."

App Store 1 Billion App Downloads
Posted on: Posted on April 23, 2009 5:59 PM

It certainly wasn’t a long time coming. A billion app downloads is certainly something to shout about, and getting that achievement done in just 9 months makes it even more special. Of course, the success of the App Store is also due to the success of the iPhone, and vice versa, which is certainly a win-win situation for Apple. Considering that there are over 35,000 apps in the App Store now, it looks like the figures are just going to keep going up and up.
China Mobile Preps Its Own App Store
Posted on: Posted on April 22, 2009 6:40 PM

The world’s largest mobile operator, China Mobile, intends to launch its own application software store which should be ready by the end of the year. China Mobile’s store will be dubbed Mobile Market. It’s been said that the Mobile Market was one of the reasons why the launch of the iPhone 3G failed in China, as Apple wasn’t too happy with competition for its extremely popular App Store.

Work On Newber To Be Discontinued
Posted on: Posted on March 22, 2009 8:32 AM

If you’ve been reading the news of late, you certainly won’t be surprised to hear of more complaints regarding Apple’s approval process for the App Store, and more specifically, the time it takes to approve applications that are submitted to them. The next victim of such treatment is FreedomVoice, who are the people behind the Newber application, which can transfer calls between the iPhone and other phones. The application was submitted to Apple for approval over 6 months ago, but the company hasn’t gotten any response from Apple yet, and as such, it’s going to discontinue work on Newber, despite spending some $600,000 on it so far, which is seriously very sad news. Hopefully Apple will make some serious effort to speed up the approval process for apps that are submitted to the App Store in the future, so as to prevent this kind of incidents from happening.
Apple App Store Contract Renewal Dilemma
Posted on: Posted on March 10, 2009 10:20 AM

It looks like iPhone developers will have to suffer through a little period of uncertainty that stems from Apple’s highly successful App Store. When iPhone developers first got into the iPhone App Store, there was a one-year contract period, and those contracts are going to expire in about a month’s time, and Apple has unfortunately not announced an official contract-renewal mechanism. Developers were previously told that they would be offered a renewal option within 90 days of their contract’s expiration, but it doesn’t look like one has appeared yet. Word is that there is no process in place to offer renewals just yet, but developers will be notified via e-mail when there is one. The good news is that Apple won’t suddenly take down already-approved apps from the App Store immediately upon contract expiration, so it looks like that developers will just have to be patient for a while.
Apple Appstore Tally
Posted on: Posted on February 11, 2009 10:12 AM

We often talk about the interesting figures relating to Apple’s iPhone and sometimes it’s easy to miss the performance of Apple’s AppStore, which certainly has played a part in the iPhone’s sales. Just a little over 7-months old, Apple’s AppStore has crossed the 20,000 app mark, which is no small feat, not to mention that the AppStore launched with just a few hundred apps. Apple also recently passed the 15,000 mark in January, which just goes to show how fast it’s moving. Of course, there are a lot of silly apps in the AppStore, but that’s what makes it fun, right?

PocketGear AppStore For Windows Mobile
Posted on: Posted on February 11, 2009 8:56 AM

With the success of Apple’s AppStore, it seems like everybody is trying to emulate it. Next up is also called the “AppStore” for Windows Mobile by PocketGear. If you were hoping it would be as slick as Apple’s offering though, you’ll be slightly disappointed. Getting applications from this AppStore isn’t that straightforward as you’ll either need to go through a desktop installer, or get the link via SMS. It looks like it will be down to Microsoft and its upcoming Windows Mobile MarketPlace to see if Windows Mobile will have an online application store to challenge Apple’s AppStore.

Premium Games Coming To App Store
Posted on: Posted on January 30, 2009 9:02 AM

Tired of the usual simple and crude games on Apple’s App Store? Well, if you are, Apple might be able to offer you some premium selection sometime soon. Apparently they will be offering premium games on the App Store in the future, which will be going for about $19.99. It will be interesting to see what kind of games that users will be getting for that price point and how good they will be. We’ll have to wait until something is leaked, or they’re officially released of course, so until then, stay tuned.

App Store Downloads Hit 500 Million
Posted on: Posted on January 16, 2009 10:20 AM

Apple’s App Store is certainly one of the reasons for the iPhone’s success, but let’s not forget that it’s a great achievement by Apple, and has spawned enough copycats from other manufacturers too. Apple’s App Store has managed to hit a new milestone, and in extremely good time too. In about 6 months after opening, the App Store has managed to hit 500 million downloads, which is extremely quick, considering that the iTunes music store needed about 2-years to get 500 million downloads.
