Google releases native search app for S60

Google releases native search app for S60

With last week's announcement that Google would be added to Nokia's Mobile Search service, it's no surprise that Google is attempting to score some brownie points with Symbian users. This point is driven even further with the release today of Google's native client for the S60 OS.

The application adds a Google Search shortcut to the S60 idle screen (only for devices with either a 'Ctrl' or 'pencil/edit' key), and provides even faster access than the addition to Nokia's mobile search. Typing a search query into the new native client will automatically load the search in the browser with one click access. You can download the new client at Google Mobile.

Being native means much better performance than the previous Java-based version of the Google Maps service - a huge overall difference in speed will be felt.

Thanks to the GPS, your current location, which will be shown by a blue dot on the satellite image.

Windows Live on Symbian phones

Windows Live on Symbian phones
While stranger things have happened, it is surprising to see Nokia teaming up with Microsoft, bringing ActiveSync support and Windows Live services to Symbian users. This software will enable Symbian users to access their Hotmail and MSN Messenger programs along with ActiveSync. To know if your Symbian-powered handset is compatible with this new software, just type ‘*#0000#’ and check the version. Anything at or higher than 3.0638.0.01 is good to go. Currently, the service is available only in Europe with no word on when will it be made accessible to the rest of the world. Bummer.
