Siemens Gigaset: A "green" phone

The Siemens Gigaset, winner of a Red Dot Design Award earlier this year, is a eco-friendly device concept for green goodness. Made from an enviro-friendly plastic, the Gigaset has the option of running off of normal electrical energy, or by using solar power, built into its docking station. The Gigaset also features user friendly options including an intuitive menu, caller ID, widescreen OLED display and 3D surround speakers.

3G Femto Home Access coming soon

Nokia Siemens Networks are putting to test its 3G femto cell product early next year. Known as the 3G Femto Home Access, this tiny base station that looks like a WiFi router is capable of enhancing WCDMA coverage in homes of consumers, giving them superior connections at all times. Similar to other femto cell products, the 3G Femto Home Access also hooks up to wireless network operators' backhaul networks through a broadband Internet connection. It is hoped that this product will roll out by Q3 next year. Will WiFi be obsolete on cellphones soon with better and better 3G connections?

BenQ sticks to cellphones

BenQ has plans to launch a trio of cellphones in the second half of August, and they are the E72, M7, and T51. All this will happen once the SF71 is released to the consumers, being the last BenQ-Siemens dual-branded handset. There is no word on pricing or specifications of all those cellphones, but the SF71 looks like any other ordinary clamshell handset. No word on when support for BenQ-Siemens cellphones will cease, and this could cause consumers to shun the SF71 due to the possible lack of long term support.

BenQ Siemens SF71 is all shiny

The BenQ Siemens SF71 will be released in Taiwan anytime now, and this handset features a very nice mirror-effect screen design that will not only attract envious stares from those around, but plenty of fingerprints as well. The entire keypad is flat in nature and made of metal. This 3G-enabled handset comes with a 2 megapixel camera, a VGA camera for video calls, Bluetooth A2DP connectivity, and a 2" 256k color QVGA LCD display. Pricing details for the Taiwan market have yet to be confirmed, but if you want to get one of these, make sure you carry a lint-free cloth in your pocket as well to wipe fingerprints off the SF71 every five minutes or so.

BenQ Q-fi EF71 now in pink

Although BenQ might be a pretty beleaguered company at the moment, it isn't shutting down completely in Taiwan just yet, with plans in the pipepline to introduce a pink colored BenQ-Siemens Q-fi EF71 special edition sometime in the near future. Features include a 2.2" 262k color display and a 2 megapixel camera with video recording capability. The camera itself is pretty versatile, boasting a night mode that takes high quality photos even under poorly lit conditions. Those who want an impromptu webcam can depend on the Q-fi EF71 when connected to a PC via USB. There will only be approximately 500 units of these available when released in Taiwan, so better grab them before they're gone.

Mysterious smartphone from BenQ-Siemens

Things are pretty mysterious on the BenQ-Siemens front, what with this unidentified handset appearing suddenly. Information regarding this mystery cellphone is more scant than finding a strand of hair on a Tibetan monk's head, so it looks like the folks at BenQ-Siemens are paying their people really well to keep this offering under wraps. Shaped after a black pebble, this smartphone comes with a red side which surrounds the entire side and front. More updates will be available as soon as there is some progress.

Concept phones from BenQ-Siemens

A Berlin-based BenQ Mobile subsidiary was charged with the task of developing future concept handsets, with special attention to BenQ-Siemens of course. Recently, their new designs were released, and the one that caught our eye the most is this wristwatch phone that automatically curls itself when slapped on your wrist. This handset, if I may call it so, comes with basic media player controls on one end and a display on the other. BenQ P51 spotted in China

Despite the fact that the BenQ-Siemens P51 received the FCC's stamp of approval a few days ago as reported, this smartphone has already been launched in China. Running on the Windows Mobile 5 operating system and boasting integrated GPS navigation, it blows to see other countries get cellphones and other gadgets much faster than us. It is currently retailing for approximately $825 in the Far East, which is a whole lot for the working class there. Hopefully by the time the P51 gets released Stateside, the hardware specifications would not be lagging a generation behind just like the ill-fated P50.

FCC approves BenQ-Siemens AF51

The almighty FCC certainly took its time in giving the BenQ-Siemens AF51 handset its nod, so hopefully we will be able to see it arrive at store shelves soon. The AF51 is pretty much an entry-level cellphone, equipped with mundane features such as a 65k color display, MMS support, GPRS connectivity, and an integrated WAP/XHTML browser. You might raise an eyebrow when you realize the AF51 does not come with an integrated camera, neither does it have MP3 playback capability. This probably means the AF51 uses polyphonic ringtones which are so 2000. You can pick up the BenQ-Siemens AF51 in Panther Black and Dolphin Grey when it is released.

Black Box concept handset

On the right is a concept cellphone from BenQ-Siemens. Dubbed the Black Box, this handset does not come with a keypad of any kind as it uses a touchscreen as a replacement instead. The user interface looks as if it can be accessed via a variety of icons with no text involved at all, making this a truly appealing phone universally which is capable of breaking the language barrier. The glossy finish reminds one of the beautiful LG Chocolate phone, but that would also mean the Black Box is a prime candidate for the "Fingerprint Magnet of the Year" award. Well, there's always the Mogo cellphone cleaner to fall back upon if you want to get rid of all the oily prints.

BenQ-Siemens unveils prototype Oxyon

BenQ-Siemens wants a piece of the catwalk action in the world of fashionable cellphones, and they aim to dethrone LG's Chocolate handset by developing the Oxyon handset. Still in the prototype stage, the Oxyon cellphone comes in a white finish that is similar to that of an iPod and has a keypad which slides out effortlessly. Features include a full QWERTY keypad, a lovely 640 x 480 VGA TFT display, a 3 megapixel camera with 3x digital zoom, an integrated MP3 player, and a microSD memory card slot. You can expect the Oxyon to roll out officially sometime next year, where such specifications might end up as the norm by then. One area of concern would be getting used to the vertical dial pad which could take some getting used to for most people.

BenQ-Siemens SL80 succeeds SL75

Argh! The march of the feminine phones is upon us! The SL80 slider handset from BenQ-Siemens will replace the highly successful SL75. This new cellphone definitely appeals to those who pay close attention to the fashion world. Features include 52MB of built-in memory, a 1.3 megapixel camera, music playback capability with support for MP3 and AAC+ formats, Internet browsing, PictBridge functionality, and a 1.8" 262k color TFT display that is legible even under direct sunlight. The SL80 also boasts productivity software such as an organizer and an address book. It is currently available in the Mauve Sensation color scheme.
