Palm OS II devices not to launch until 2009

Palm OS II devices not to launch until 2009

Too little, too late. Or so seems the reaction for reports that Palm's Linux-based open source OS, codenamed "Nova" won't be dropping until early 2009. Stephane Maes, VP Smartphone Product Marketing says that Palm will finish up on the software in late 2008, with development tools being released around the same time.

With Google's Android platform planned to make a showing in 2008, it appears as though Palm will be late to the major open source OS game. Until then, Palm will continue offering their original OS, as well as their OS based around Windows Mobile.

Support for a plethora of instant messaging programs such as AOL Instant Messenger, Windows Live Messenger, and Yahoo! instant messenger are also included.

Treo 755p from Verizon coming soon?

Treo 755p from Verizon coming soon? While Sprint has already released the Palm Treo 755p for over half a year already, those who are with Verizon are still playing the waiting game although new evidence have surfaced to show that the 755p will be released anytime now. All I can say it, Verizon had better make sure the 755p hits retail stores before Christmas is over or they would've lost a golden opportunity to generate a ton of sales. Just so you know how the Treo 755p stacks up against the competition, it will be powered by the Garnet OS and comes with 64MB of internal memory, a 320 x 320 display, a QWERTY keyboard, 3G support and aminiSD memory card slot. Doesn't sound like much, does it?

Sprint offers Palm Centro

Sprint offers Palm Centro Sprint will be releasing the Palm Centro for just $99, offering an instant $200 discount and a $100 mail-in rebate. Just to refresh your memory, the Palm Centro will run on the aging Palm OS while sporting a full QWERTY keyboard, a 320 x 320 pixel TFT touchscreen display, Bluetooth connectivity, a 1.3 megapixel camera, built-in media player capabilities, and a speakerphone among others. Great if you're about to take the plunge into the world of smartphones, but seasoned campaigners ought to look elsewhere.

Palm Treo 500v from Vodafone

Palm Treo 500v from Vodafone
The Vodafone Business site has shown that the Palm Treo 500v will be available for grabs in a dashing charcoal color this Friday, and will retail between absolutely nothing and £85.11. Obviously, the price depends on how your contract with Vodafone is at the moment. Check out our coverage on the Treo 500v's official announcement as well as the list of specifications. It seems that new subscribers will be endowed with a new Vodafone interface as well as £50 worth of Bluetooth gear. Sounds like a good deal, yes?

Treo 500v heading to the US?

Treo 500v heading to the US?
Looks like somebody has stumbled upon sensitive FCC documents, depicting the approval of the Treo 500 and 500v for sale in the US. This means those of us living Stateside will just have to hold out a little longer before we get our hands on these new Treos. As for the specifications, nothing new will be added and neither will features be dropped as these Treos make their way across the Atlantic. Strangely enough, ASUS was listed as the applicant on the FCC application rather than Palm.

Palm 500v user interface

Jason Langridge has been nice enough to upload a YouTube video that actually demonstrates the recently released Palm 500v user interface, where a combination of Vodafone Live and an all new menu interface makes it a cinch to navigate through menu pages in order to select your favorite program. The animation is actually smoother than it appears, so do expect real world performance to be much better. How do you like your Palm 500v's user interface served this time round? Do you think the company has not lost its touch yet?

Palm Centro sneak peek

Palm Centro sneak peek
PDAFrance has some more images of the upcoming Palm Centro, and judging by the photos, it eerily resembles the BlackBerry Pearl design. Well, at the very least you'll still be able to get acquainted with the extremely familiar Palm icons if you haven't yet been swept up in the Windows Mobile euphoria. The Palm Centro is tipped to be announced in Europe when September 12 rolls around, although I have absolutely no idea on why the Stateside front is very quiet on this. Perhaps Palm knows it is a losing battle to release this in the US?

Palm Treo 800p spyshot

Palm Treo 800p spyshot
The Palm Treo 800p might sound rather unfamiliar to you, but mention Gandolf and it will probably all come flooding back to you. While leaked photos in the past have shown the Gandolf to run on the Windows Mobile OS, it is also a very real possibility that it will come bundled with Palm OS Garnet as well, although I wonder whether there are still people who will stay on for a losing cause. The Treo 800p is definitely slimmer and smaller than the Treo 650, which is expected as with nearly every iteration of a new product. Will you pick this up should it come with Palm OS Garnet?

Palm Gandalf leaks further

Palm Gandalf leaks further
Little is known about the Palm Gandalf initially, but as with everything else, time reveals more and more information. We now know that the Gandalf smartphone will come in a couple of flavors - a touchscreen and non-touchscreen version. The former will run on the Windows Mobile 6 operating system, while the latter will be powered by a new version of the Palm OS. Both devices share the same 2.4" 65k color QVGA display, 64MB RAM, 256MB ROM, and a 2 megapixel camera. The Palm Gandalf measures 117mm x 65mm x 13.8mm and weighs 135 grams. There is no word on pricing or availability, but chances are Vodafone will retain its position as the initial carrier. I wonder just how many more miles can the legs of a new Palm OS carry the Gandalf...

Treo 755p image leaked

Treo 755p image leaked
Treonauts can rejoice when they lay their eyes on this spyshot of the new Treo 755p. This Sprint-bound smartphone shares very similar styling features with the Treo 750w and 680 as seen by the internal antenna. Hopefully other features such as a megapixel class camera, Bluetooth and EV-DO connectivity will be retained. Word has it that the Treo 755p will be launched sometime in the middle of next month at a yet undisclosed price.
