HTC, Samsung and other manufacturers have been discovered a while back to have a software called Carrier IQ installed on their phones. Curious about what this piece of software does, developer TrevE decided to take a look and discovered that the software basically creates a detailed log of just about everything that you do on your phone completely without your knowledge or control. We’re guessing that this did not sit well with users who were particular about their privacy.
Now it seems that Carrier IQ is not happy with TrevE outing their software and detailing its process and has sent him a cease and desist letter, threatening him with a lawsuit if he does not retract his article along with a press release of the retraction. While we can’t say that we’re too familiar with the legal technicalities in cases like these, our basic understanding is that as long as it was used for educational purposes, it does not count as a violation of copyrighted materials.
For a company that appears to be collecting your data without your knowledge, they sure are going about this in the wrong way, even giving off the effect that perhaps they are trying to cover all of this up with a lawsuit.
