According to a report online, Intel Lab’s pollution sampling project called Common Sense has been hard at work with the creation of “mobile air monitoring stations” which will be used to capture air samples and measure pollution levels. Intel plans to integrate these components into cellphones in order to monitor the levels of pollution in the air. The cellphones would work in two ways- people can purposely go out to certain locations in order to gather data, or they could let the phone passively collect data whenever it is turned on. At the moment, the technology is still under development- Intel hasn’t been able to create a chip that can measure particulate matter and be small enough to fit inside a phone, though it should only be a matter of time. If you had a choice, how interested would you be in helping out to monitor air pollution using your phone?
