Funambol Provides Push Email For The Masses

Funambol Provides Push Email For The Masses

Funambol develops an open source server that mimics Blackberry’s push/sync functionalities that interfaces with any email server like Microsoft Exchange or Lotus Notes. They have also developed a client software that works on most mobile phones.

The great thing is that the Funambol community is very active and quick porting the client to more and more mobile phones, like the Blackberry, though why anybody would want it on the Blackberry is another issue. Its also supported on the iPhone and Google’s Android platform.

The company has a fairly simple demo site at MyFunambol.com that users can point their cellphones to, to try out the push/sync functions. Hopefully all this will see more push email for everybody.

Jawbone 2: Not Headset, Rather Earwear

Jawbone 2: Not Headset, Rather Earwear

After passing the FCC’s hurdle, the Jawbone 2 is finally here! The maker of the device, Aliph doesn’t call it a headset, rather an earwear.

Stylish as ever, the new Jawbone is 50% smaller than the original award-winning Jawbone, and features noise elimination technology (NoiseAssassin) that provides even better voice quality than the original, and in a smaller, more ergonomic package.

Jawbone's NoiseAssassin technology literally feels your speech with its patented Voice Activity Sensor (VAS). The Jawbone headset uses the VAS to distinguish the sound of your voice from ambient noise with incredible accuracy and then uses proprietary Digital Signal Processing (DSP) algorithms to subtract the noise so only the sound of your voice comes through.

The Jawbone 2 is available for $129.99 at AT&T retail stores, and at www.jawbone.com.

Nokia: We Recycle

Nokia: We Recycle

Nokia USA has come up with a new initiative to help save old mobiles from making a new home in city landfills, and instead recycle them for the greater good of the environment.

The newly announced “We Recycle” program, is extremely simple, and should be very popular with end users; while at the same time generate good publicity for Nokia.

All users have to do is simply log onto We Recycle, enter their information, and a postage paid return label is generated. Users can just stick that on an envelope containing the device, and send it off to where Nokia will strip it down for recycling.

This seems like a very good move, and whatever protects our earth will be good. It’s good to see Nokia take this direction, as everybody seems to be going green nowadays.

Intel Dismisses New Atom iPhone Rumor

Intel Dismisses New Atom iPhone Rumor Intel is dismissing previous rumors that they are teaming up with Apple to make an atom based iPhone. Though this may be disappointing for some people, they can take heart that rumors are sometimes based on facts, and who knows what might happen in the future?

Sony Ericsson's W980 Walkman Phone In Q3 2008

Sony Ericsson's W980 Walkman Phone In Q3 2008

Sony Ericsson’s upcoming W980 was previewed last February during CEBIT 2008, and it’s slated for a Q3 release. Sony Ericsson is touting it to set a new standard for mobile phone music, especially with its unique audio enhancing technology, coupled with Sony’s “Walkman On Top” design. Walkman on top is essentially placing the common music oriented buttons on top of the flip covering the phone’s keypad.

Other new and mouth watering features include the W980’s built in FM transmitter, which allows it to share its music with nearby devices capable of receiving FM signals (read: almost every phone in the market). This does seem a lot better than the Zune’s “squirting” of music.

Other features of the W980 include:

  • Accessing Walkman features from standby mode
  • Preset equalizers
  • SensMe, PlayNow, TrackID,
  • Bluetooth Stereo
  • 3.2 Megapixel camera
  • Up to 8GB internal memory

Microsoft Releases Windows Live For Windows Mobile

Microsoft Releases Windows Live For Windows Mobile

Microsoft has just released Windows Live for Windows Mobile devices. This shouldn’t be confused with Live Search for Windows Mobile. Windows Live for Windows Mobile integrates Windows Live Search, Hotmail, and Spaces into user’s Windows Mobile devices.

Previously, Microsoft only gave this software to OEM’s. So if users bought a Windows Mobile device that didn’t have it pre-installed, they wouldn’t be able to install it, though as per usual, hackers have previously leaked unsupported builds on the net.

It’s still confusing as to why Microsoft doesn’t include Windows Live Messenger for Windows Mobile in this downloadable version. It still remains an OEM option, where the device maker must chose between the default Windows Messenger, or Windows Live Messenger.

Projector Phones By The End Of 2008?

Projector Phones By The End Of 2008?

Mobile phone projectors, or Pico projectors as they’re called, are looming to be the next big thing. With the obsession with miniaturizing everything possible, people are currently doing their best to cram the projector into the humble phone. If everything goes smoothly, we’ll all soon be able to project out very own Batman logo’s directly from our phones (onto the wall of course!).

John Van Scoter, the senior vice president of Texas Instruments (TI) has confirmed that mobile phones will hit the market with pico projectors in tow later this year. If everything goes according to plan, TI expects to see the prevalence of projectors in mobile phones start to rival that of cameras in mobile phones. TI recently unveiled its DLP Pico technology to bring the vivid colors and sharp pictures of DLP displays into the world of mobile devices.

Hopefully mobile phones equipped with portable projectors will become a reality sooner rather than later.

The Easy Mobile Calling Phone

The Easy Mobile Calling Phone

The “EMC”(Easy Mobile Calling) phone by designer Matthias Pinkert has been seen on Yanko Design. The phone itself looks simple, and stylish, though it keeps things to an absolute minimum.

It apparently features four keys for direct calling, one-touch calling, GPS tracking, and a lanyard to hang it around the wearer’s neck. It doesn’t look like a very feasible phone for general usage, though its certainly unique.

Live Pics Of The Treo 800w

Live Pics Of The Treo 800w

Rumors of the upcoming Treo 800w have been floating around for quite a while now, though this time we have live pics to accompany it!

The 800w in the picture seems to be of the silvery blue colour that was rumored before, though its official colour is said to be charcoal black. Reports say that it sports a microUSB connector, and has only one shift key, as opposed to the 2 shift keys on the Centro.

The black Treo in the picture here is a photoshopped picture of the blue one to see how things might look like in the rumored official color.

The specs of the Treo 800w are as follows:

  • Threaded SMS (looks to be the Palm type, not Microsoft's)
  • WM 6.1
  • Autonomous GPS
  • KB is larger than the Centro, slightly smaller than the 750/755
  • KB keys still light up
  • It's very fast with no lag
  • 320x320 resolution
  • EvDO Rev A (though some tester units are not Rev A active as of now)
  • Wifi
  • 256/128 Memory

Intel To Release iPhone-like Tablet?

Intel To Release iPhone-like Tablet?

Intel Germany’s CEO Hannes Schwaderer has just non-chalantly confirmed that they are working with Apple to create an Intel Atom based iPhone. Rumors have been floating around forever regarding this.

The rumored atom-based iPhone will be expected to be much larger than the current iPhone, especially since it sports a 720x480 display. There are even rumors that Steve Jobs will unveil the thing during this year’s coming WWDC 2008.

With all these different points, it probably wont be an iPhone, and will probably be more of a UMPC(Ultra-Mobile PC). Though do bear in mind, these are all rumors, though even rumors have to start from somewhere.
