In Brief: Fido brings Motorola Q9h and Samsung JACK to Canada

In Brief: Fido brings Motorola Q9h and Samsung JACK to Canada Canadian carrier Fido has announced that they are bringing the Motorola Q9h and Samsung JACK to Canada. The two Windows Mobile smartphones will be available for $475 for the Q9h with a two year contract, and the JACK for $400 with a two year contract. That's if new customers can get over how ridiculous Fido's data plans are priced in the first place.

Sprint says Simply Unlimited really is unlimited, except for BlackBerry

Sprint says Simply Unlimited really is unlimited, except for BlackBerry Sprint announced their new Simply Unlimited plan yesterday, which provides an all-inclusive plan for $100 a month. But is the package really as Unlimited as Sprint says it is? Apparently, Simply Unlimited is not available for the BlackBerry's running on the Express Server, unless they feel like shelling out an extra $20, thanks to licensing agreements with RIM. Bummer!

Apple to keep iPhone development under lock and key?

Apple to keep iPhone development under lock and key?

With the upcoming release of Apple's SDK for the iPhone imminent, rumors upon rumors of how the development will take place have been floating around. One of the more realistic and even worrisome rumors is that Apple will have their hands around the throats of developers (metaphorically, of course), only allowing applications to be downloaded through iTunes, and only programs which are hand-picked and approved by Apple.

Another rumor floating around says that the upcoming SDK release will only be a beta version, and that the full version will be released in June at WWDC (maybe with a 3G iPhone?) Of course, these restrictions are kind of worthless with jailbreaking running rabid. Just for once, let us have our iPhone apps, and eat them too.

RIM patent for BlackBerry Slide touchscreen device

RIM patent for BlackBerry Slide touchscreen device

RIM has stuck to their guns when it comes to all-around design of their BlackBerry devices. Until now, the BlackBerry has shied away from integrating touch technology, but a new patent reveals that RIM is willing to mix it up. The patent reveals a BlackBerry with a slide-out QWERTY keypad, which allows for a larger display.

The typical trackball navigation is still intact, but the interface is definitely a huge change for the traditional RIM device. The interface is designed to rotate when in text mode into a landscape orientation. Some look at the design as a direct competitor to the iPhone, predicting such features as GPS and Wi-Fi and possible 3G support for HSPA networks.

Nokia planning wider N-Gage launch in coming weeks

Nokia planning wider N-Gage launch in coming weeks

Jaakko Kaidesoja, director of games, services and software for Nokia, recently provided some new information about the future of N-Gage at a statement made in Finland. Kaidesoja says that it will only be a "matter of weeks" before the N-Gage gaming platform spreads to other N-series phones.

The next Nokia phones to get N-Gage access will be the N82, N95 and N81 owners, with the N73 and N96 rolling out in Q2. He also mentioned that full S60 support and touchscreen games were on the way.

UBS predicts 3G iPhone within 6 months, chip by Infineon

UBS predicts 3G iPhone within 6 months, chip by Infineon

Analysts have been speculating for months about when and if a 3G iPhone will be released. UBS is tossing their opinion into the gauntlet, speculating that the 3G iPhone could be making an appearance within the next six months, with a possible announcement in September. Interestingly, they also make the claim that the 3G chips themselves will be made by German corporation Infineon Technologies AG.

We're still betting on a June 2008 release for the device. Back in December, rumors were being tossed around about Taiwan-based Innolux shipping touchscreens to Cupertino, which would place release for a new iPhone in mid-June. Speculation doesn't lead to fact though.

Samsung i200 WinMo smartphone makes an appearance

Samsung i200 WinMo smartphone makes an appearance This is the first we've heard of the Samsung i200, but we'd never deny our glee for even more smartphones on he market. The prototype candybar Windows Mobile device is only 11.8mm thick, yet packs in a decent punch of features. Featuring functionality with GSM frequencies all the way up to 3G HSDPA, the blue colored accented phone can deliver with high-speed browsing, and also throws in a 2 MP camera for good measure.

Sprint offers Simply Everything

Sprint offers Simply Everything

As it turns out, Sprint did have a positive reason for closing their stores for two hours this morning to deliver a now not-so-mysterious webcast to their employees. Sprint has announced their new Simply Everything unlimited package. For $100 a month, Sprint customers will be able to get unlimited “voice, data, text, e-mail, Web-surfing, Sprint TV, Sprint Music, GPS Navigation, Direct Connect and Group Connect.”

So while Sprint might be a week or so late for the big rolling out of unlimited plans by the other major providers, the total access they seem to be offering with the Simply Everything plan called for some extra planning time. We forgive you.

Samsung i550w GPS device gets Wi-Fi treatment

Samsung i550w GPS device gets Wi-Fi treatment

The Samsung i550 looks like an impressive device on paper, until you realize what ISN"T on the paper is what matters. Sure, the i550 offers GPS functionality along with a sleek candybar styled design and slow EDGE networking, but the lack of Wi-Fi access was a real turn-off.

Luckily, Samsung has realized the error of their ways and is now trying to repent with the i550w, which is actually the same old i550, but now with a Wi-Fi update to come along for high-speed access anywhere you can maintain a signal.

LINC concept leases you a phone, recycles for later use

LINC concept leases you a phone, recycles for later use

The standard procedure for cellphone ownership goes something along these lines. Buy the phone, use the phone, break the phone, toss the phone. Such a waste of materials! LINC offers a phone which provides a leased service, rather than a owned good. Every year or so, users are sent new hardware from LINC, at which point the users send their old devices back to the company, where the phones are dissembled and parts reused.

All data and personal phone information is transfered digitally to the new device so you can just start using it right when you get it, instead of having to re-add all of your contacts every year. The phone is automatically dissembled in one easy step and then divided into core parts for recycling. [Photo Gallery]

Sprint stores closing from 9am-11am PST for mystery webcast

Sprint stores closing from 9am-11am PST for mystery webcast

This is the type of story which could be huge, or it could mean absolutely nothing, but apparently it's important enough to Sprint to be closing down their nationwide stores from 9am to 11am PST this morning in order to allow employees to view a special webcast. We're not quite sure what this mysterious webcast might be offering to Sprint employees. My optimistic side hopes it's announcement of the official unlimited plans that Sprint was testing out.
