Qualcomm surges ahead with multi-mode 4G chip

Qualcomm surges ahead with multi-mode 4G chip

Qualcomm has announced that they are the first to have created a chip which can meet the standards of multiple 4G networking standards. Not only can their chip support Long Term Evolution (LTE), but also meets the standards of the LTE's lesser known competitors.

The MDM9600 and MDM 9800 chips will offer support for the upcoming EVDO Rev. B and the UMB standards for CDMA broadband speeds. The chips will also support 3.5G technology, such as the earlier EVDO format. Qualcomm plans to sample the devices in Spring 2009, which gives us a time frame on when we can see 4G become the new 3G.

AT&T lets current iPhone owners upgrade without changing contract

AT&T lets current iPhone owners upgrade without changing contract

The announcement of the 16 GB iPhone raised some questions for those of us who already own the 8 GB model of the device. AT&T has made an announcement answering some questions about upgrading to the 16 GB model.

Users were discovering that it seemed their contracts were automatically being extended to a new 2-year agreement, but AT&T says that because of a quirk in the iPhone activation, this is just an illusion. The new phone is automatically backdated to the original contract date, so you won't have to wait even longer to upgrade again. Users can also keep their same number when they make the jump.

Modu has some big plans for their new modular phone. Reps from Modu say that they can create $1 billion of revenue with their new device, using modular "jackets" which can change the phones function and design depending on what use you are in need of.

Modu's system relies on a range of cases which transforms the device into a texting device, music player, or gaming device, depending on which "jacket" you use. By January of next year, Modu plans to have a series of slots called "modu mates" available to morph the phone into a photo frame, clock, and other devices. The new device launches in Russia, Italy and Israel in October.

Ericsson announces U500 12 MP mobile platform

Ericsson announces U500 12 MP mobile platform

Megapixels might not be the main concern of camera phone users. I mean, right when you hit the 3 MP mark, photo resolution becomes satisfactory for the amateur photographer. This isn't stopping Ericsson from introducing their new U500 mobile camera platform.

This year we're going to see some 8 MP camera phones popping up, and when this baby gets released in the first half of 2009, we can plan on seeing 12 MP camera phones. It might cost you an arm and a leg, but making poster sized prints of camera phone images might be worth it.

Google likely out of 700 MHz spectrum race

Google likely out of 700 MHz spectrum race

An article from Forbes indicates that Google might already be out of the race for the coveted 700 Mhz auction. Analysts don't believe Google will be the one shelling out billions for the C Block spectrum, but it's more likely that Verizon Wireless will be.

Verizon is eyeing the nationwide block to further close the gap between themselves and AT&T. Verizon currently owns 49 megahertz of spectrum compared to AT&T's 75 megahertz. Google on the other hand will save their money for other endeavors.
