Smartphones were the most returned holiday gift

Smartphones's were the most returned holiday gift

The Opinion Research Corporation has released a study that shows that smartphones were the most returned gift item this year from the past holiday season. The study shows that a whopping 21% of the smartphones given as gifts this holiday season were returned to the store. The survey also notes that the iPhone and RIM Blackberry were not included in this study.

The most frequently cited reason for return was an "inability to understand the product setup," which pretty much means people just didn't "get it". They seemingly don't understand how to set up their devices. One of the perks of the iPhone is the easy set-up through iTunes.

Motorola patent reveals folding roll-up phone

Motorola patent reveals folding roll-up phone

There is a point when mobile devices will become so tiny, that they will cross the line of portability, and become awkward to use. The smaller the device gets, the harder on the eyes and hands it'll be. A new patent from Motorola reveals a solution to the problem of the constant demand for smaller and smaller devices, though still offering functionality.

The patent titled "User Interface System" details a device with a foldable roll-up display and keypad. Previously, the problem with devices like this is that foldable materials aren't exactly highly functional either. Try typing on a piece of material flapping in the wind. Motorola figured out a solution to the problem using a reservoir with electrorheological fluid beneath the foldable parts of the device. When an electrical charge is applied to the material, it becomes rigid.

AT&T, the big winner of 2007 Q4

AT&T, the big winner of 2007 Q4

While many companies are in the red after a potentially disastrous performance in the last quarter of last year, including Sprint, who recently talked about the possibility of lay-offs, it would appear that AT&T was the big winner of the ending round of 2008. In a performance that was decidedly helped by the acquisition of Apple's iPhone, AT&T showed a record breaking quarter with 2.7 million new wireless customers. Many seem to have made the jump from Sprint to AT&T in the search of greener pastures. Many were just psyched for the iPhone.

NTT DoCoMo gonna sex it up with Android?

NTT DoCoMo gonna sex it up with Android?

Sources say that Japan's largest telecom company, NTT DoCoMo, is in talks to bring the open-source Google Android OS to their handsets. DoCoMo is one of the founding members of the Open Handset Alliance, the group sponsoring the Google made OS, so it wouldn't be a huge surprise if the Japan provider mixes Android into the mix. On a side note, this is the strongest evidence so far suggesting that DoCoMo will be using Android.

Both devices feature tri-band connectivity, a 2 MP camera, a microSD slot, as well as a collection of female geared applications which set the fight for feminism back a few decades, such as Fragrance Type, Shopping List, and Calorie Consumption. Sony Ericsson roll out new T-Series and R-Series devices

Sony Ericsson roll out new T-Series and R-Series devices

Just as we predicted yesterday, Sony Ericsson has made an announcement today introducing their T270 camera phone and the cameraless T280 phones, and a duo of new radio phones, the R300 and R306. The two T-Series devices are thin (0.5 mm) candybar phones which focus on basic web browsing and calling, both with Bluetooth support and two-tone color design. Instead of a camera on the T280, users get a FM radio with RDS station data support. Both which will be available in March.

The new R-series phones focus on radio, rather than music, for developing areas where radio is still the major form of communication. Both models offer fast access to their AM/FM radios and buttons for tuning presets to favorite stations. 3D sound effects and a volume boost feature allows users to use the built-in speakers for general use. The R300 is a candybar shaped phone with a simple VGA camera. The R306 offers a flip design, larger speakers, and a more advanced 1.3 MP camera. The R300 ships first this spring, while the R306 launches this summer.
