Verizon joins Google's Open Handset Alliance

Verizon made a surprise announcement today on their joining of Google’s Open Handset Alliance, made for promoting open source software development for mobile devices. This move suggests that Verizon will also be using Google’s Linux-based Android OS for some of their phones after the platforms release.

This announcement comes after a recent decision from Verizon to launch an “Any App, Any Phone” unlocked handset campaign for some point in 2008. This leaves AT&T as the lone major service provider of the big four in the US to not have joined hands with the OHA.
