T-Mobile offers free activation until end of the year

T-Mobile offers free activation until end of the year

There might not be much of the year left to enjoy this offer, but T-Mobile has decided to show some holiday cheer, offering free activation until the start of 2008. And while T-Mobile takes a stance against The Grinch, this sign of merriment may be more of a Ebeneezer Scrouge act. Just the fact that no activation fees will be present means that the new contracts are going to come rolling in. Even if the price reduction will be barely enough to feed a small family at a cheap diner.

Apple looks to patent wireless purchasing

Apple looks to patent wireless purchasingA fresh patent filed back in 2006, but only revealed recently shows that Apple is looking to delve further into wireless purchasing via the iPhone and iPod Touch devices. The patent titled "Wireless communication system" would allow customers to wirelessly order products as they are approaching a store. The customer could then pop into the store, possibly avoiding the depression of waiting in lines, and pop right out with their items in hand. A service like this could work wonders in a restaurant. Just order and pay from your device and then consume. What could possibly be more geared towards the American market?

Huawei handset officially makes its way to the U.S.

Huawei handset officially makes its way to the U.S.

Chinese phone manufacturer Huawei has officially made the jump across the sea with their introduction of the entry-level M318 clamshell device into the U.S. mobile market. The M318 passed through the guard of the FCC back in June, though only recently made its debut in North America under a partnership with MetroPCS.

The CDMA-enabled device won't pack too many extras in, even leaving out the luxurious flare of a camera or Bluetooth functionality, though what you can expect is a dirt cheap price. Asian mobile companies often test the US waters by offering super-cheap handsets first to get a taste of American soil.

Nokia E90 takes a bullet, becomes a star

Nokia E90 takes a bullet, becomes a star

You really can find anything on eBay. Nokia might be known for their sleek phones, but we weren't aware that target practice was one of the popular features. A Nokia E90 that was "accidentally" shot at with a 12 caliber rifle was recently up for grabs on eBay, if you were so inclined.

The poor victim device was sold for $20.50 with 12 bids clocked in for the E90. Further proof that some people will buy anything as long has it has an interesting story to go along.

Leaked: Nokia N95 8GB NAM to ship Feb 15?

Leaked: Nokia N95 8GB NAM to ship Feb 15?

Only days after Nokia leaked the upcoming launch of the Nokia N95 8 GB NAM, Mobile City Online has listed the device as having a February 15th shipping/arrival date for a pre-order price of $800 (Ouch!). Now, MCO has been known in the past to push back their availabilty date after the fact, but this could be a good indication that a 3G supporting Nokia N95 NAM could be well on its way to the market by early Q2 of 2008, hopefully at the latest.

Cell Phone service takes to the tracks in Boston

Cell Phone service takes to the tracks in Boston

MBTA commuters in Boston have been lucky enough to be guinea pigs for a service by InSite Wireless that allows for mobile devices to operate even while on the train (recently on airplanes as well), traveling through the tunnels. Boston travelers will be able to use their devices even when their train goes underground into some of the cities busiest stations.

AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless have all signed up to use the InSite service, which works by building wireless networks inside the tunnels and underground train stations, and then charging the network providers to use the service. The Downtown Crossing, Government Center, State and Park Street have all been wired for operation, with more planned for the future.

AT&T offers teens advice on driving over the holidays

AT&T offers teens advice on driving over the holidays

AT&T has issued a press release with tips for teen drivers who plan on hot-rodding around over the New Years holiday. Here are some of the helpful nuggets AT&T has to offer (italics added by us):

  • Make safe driving your most important call. If you think a wireless phone call will be distracting, either don't answer the call or just hang up.
  • Never use your phone to take pictures, send and read messages, record video or watch TV while driving.
  • Avoid stressful or emotional conversations while driving.

  • So, you heard them kids. Just hang up on your mother when your on the phone, don't watch TV when behind the wheel, and do your best to not get emotional when you find out your friend just crashed because he was drunk behind he wheel. Such sound advice. In fact, just don't drive or use your phone, period, over the holidays. :-)
