Samsung, NXP and T3G announce first multi-mode phone

Samsung, NXP Semiconductors and T3G Technologies have announced the world's first TD-SCDMA HSDPA/GSM/GPRS/EDGE multi-mode mobile phone. Powered by a software-defined mobile modem, the Samsung SGH-T578H is said to run about 20 times faster transfers (so they say) than GPRS, which would be fast enough to download severel high-definition mp3 files in less than a minutes time. The phone is planned for launch in 10 major cities throughout China, where users will be able to use TD-SCDMA support to stream high-speed multimedia files.
