iPhone coming to Australia soon

Story posted on: November 01, 2007, filed in: apple

iPhone coming to Australia soon For those of you living "down under" and curious on when the iPhone might be headed your way, Apple has been looking for a suitable network provider. A report this morning claims that Apple is in talks with Australia's Telstra mobile network, which has reportedly begun testing the iPhone on their service. Telstra CEO Sol Trujillo confirmed these rumors to Sydney's Daily Telegraph news publication, but says that the deal is not yet signed and that no final decisions have been made. In order to operate with Telstra, Apple would have to produce a phone that can utilize the networks Next G 850 MHz frequency, which needs specialized handsets to function correctly. If the iPhone does in fact land a deal with Telstra, you can expect an iPhone release next year when Apple plans to broaden the phones user base.

I purchased an 16 gig Iphone in China, and brought it back 2 Australia. It doesn't work now, but I was wondering whether it could work if the iphone is released in Australia...(Could you like buy a special sim card for it or something?)

Why the hell don't Apple just supply the phone to Australia like all other phone manufacturers.
Surely they are not a non profit organization. Just give us the bloody phone. I am with Vodafone and will have to hack the phone to get it to work. I don't want to switch to HELLSTRA

I went into a Adelaide non-Telstra, non-Optus Phone Outlet today where my wife purchased a Blackberry. I stated that I was holding out for the iPhone. The salesman asked whether I wanted to see the iPhone. They went out the back and brought a iPhone in its box sealed. He stated they will be released "this side of July" and that they can order stock now ready for release. However Apple has only sent 8Gig non 3G phones for the intitial launch.

My assumptions from this is that they will not be locked to one carrier.

I would much prefer the iphone to come out in Australia with Telstra because I'm already with them and because optus (the other leading contender) tends to often have bad reception. In my opinion, Telstra is a lot better company and phone provider than Optus.
