Half of the global population uses mobile phones

Half of the global population uses mobile devices

Worldwide mobile telephone subscriptions have reached 3.3 billion, which is equivalent to half of the world's population. It's taken only 26 years for cell phones to conquer half of the globe. "For children growing up today the issue is not whether they will get a mobile phone, it's a question of when," says Mark Newman, head of research at Informa (the research company who released the information) said. The constant fall of cell phone prices and the massive availability has turned the mobile market into the fastest growing business sector seen in modern times. No doubt this figure will continue to grow.

Publisher's note: don't forget that carriers make money on the subscriptions - not the phones. also, there is a number of people who have more than one subscription, but they are a small minority.

Ofcom rules for faster contract transfers

Ofcom rules for faster contract transfers UK mobile regulator Ofcom has announced a new set of rules that will make it easier for users to switch mobile phone providers. Currently, it takes users up to a few days to transfer their phone numbers and such, until the new service is finally up and running.

The new rules means that these wait times will be shaved down to a total of about two hours. Ofcom initially wanted to change the standard transfer time to two days, down from the old five days, but decided to take it even a step further to help make customers lives easier. If mobile companies are worried about not having enough time to implement such a system, don't worry. The rule doesn't have to be fully implemented until September 1, 2009. And something tells us mobile companies aren't going to be rushing to implement the new rule…

Helio Mysto not so mysterious anymore

Helio Mysto not so mysterious anymore

CrunchGear has gotten their hands on an image (with the typical blurriness intact) of what appears to be the upcoming Helio Mysto device. The Mysto is a CDMA update for the U600 device. No release information or specs have been revealed quite yet, but the image vaguely says something about $150, so we're guessing that would be the price.

If you're frequently in noisy areas, bone conduction technology is a way to never miss a word of what is being said to you on the phone. The only problem is being able to be heard yourself with all of the background racket. It's also very good for people with hearing problems, as bone conduction works different than with sound waves. The Sound Leaf+ doesn't have any pricing information just yet, but it seems to be one of those products only for Japan.

Samsung Ultra Smart F700 coming to Asia?

Samsung Ultra Smart F700 coming to Asia? Word on the street is that the Samsung Ultra Smart F700 is making a jump to the Malaysian mobile market, also possibly moving to other Asian countries. Currently only available in Germany and the U.K., the smooth spring-loaded slide phone offers a haptic touch screen display with a smooth spring opening mechanism for a solid opening and closing of the slider. The phone has gotten some good reviews in the past, with most negative comments spawning from the phone's glossy surface, which evidently shows fingerprints a little too well. According to Samsung, the F700 could make the jump to more Asian countries by early next year.

NICO+, simply a phone

NICO+, simply a phone

It seems that most Japanese cellphone users are only using 10% of their rather advanced phones' functionality. That's a ton of wasted phone. The Willcom NICO+ prides itself on being a phone and nothing but a phone, so help them. With the little exception of e-mail functionality, the NICO+ device is only used to make calls. Many Japanese users spend so much money on these fancy phones, only to use them for e-mail and gaming when they have free time.
