Sony Ericsson touchscreen slider patent

Sony Ericsson touchscreen slider patent

Looks like Sony Ericsson are pretty serious when it comes to taking on the iPhone where touchscreen devices are concerned. They have applied for another patent known as “Housing arrangement for a portable device with display”. This concept dwells upon the reverse slider that has been explored by other manufacturers such as BenQ , Asus and LG, although Sony Ericsson decided to throw in a touchscreen interface as well. I'm not too thrilled with the idea, but at the very least your touchscreen gets some semblance of protection when it is not in use.

Sony Ericsson W880i successor image leak

Sony Ericsson W880i successor image leak
Here are a few more (customarily blur) snapshots for you to feast your eyes upon - the successor to the Sony Ericsson W880i. This new handset will supposedly support HSDPA connectivity - something that is a given these days. I think what most people would hope for though, would be a standard 3.5mm headphone jack so that you don't have to fork out additional dollars to listen to your music via a pair of Bluetooth headphones or deal with those pesky headphones with proprietary connectors.

More info on Samsung i550

More info on Samsung i550
Here's more news on the Samsung i550 that was on parade at IFA 2007 in Berlin this year. This phone has been officially announced, but there is no statement on release dates just yet. The most interesting feature would be the integrated GPS function, making it the first of its kind from Samsung that runs on the S60 platform. Other specifications have been covered in our previous post - including the 3.2 megapixel camera with auto focus and flash, a dedicated camera button, HSDPA, USB 2.0, and Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity, a crisp 2.6" display, and a microSD memory card slot for expansion options. Rumor has it the i550 will hit retail stores this November with a price tag in the region of 400 Euros. Time for another upgrade, perhaps?

Samsung G600 reviewed

Samsung G600 reviewed

Register Hardware have reviewed the Samsung G600 and here's what they have to say about it.

The Samsung’s G600's five-megapiaxel camera will be an attractive feature for some buyers. The quality snapper doesn't dominate the phone's design, though. The handet's slim, elegant, understated and solid in the hand. Taking and making calls, the quality of the G600 is top-class too. We experienced clear calls, good reception and an all-round very reliable performance. The on-board music player ticks the right boxes - as long as decent headphones are used - and Samsung provides a generous bundle.

Doesn't sound like a phone that will attract attention, but it's main strength lies in its reliability and quality camera. One of the major drawbacks would be the lack of 3G connectivity - something that we hope to see in future revisions.

Samsung i760 first impressions

Samsung i760 first impressions
For those who are looking for an alternative experience other than the aging Treo and Motorola Q, how about taking the Samsung i760 into consideration as your next purchase? The external numeric keypad works great in summoning your list of contacts without having to access the touchscreen or sliding out the keyboard, and one-handed SMS composers will definitely love this feature. When equipped with an extendable battery, the Samsung i760 is still slimmer than the Treo 700wx so that goes to say a lot. Unfortunately, the camera has a mere 1.3 megapixel count, so make sure there's good lighting if you want to take a decent pic. While there are some niggling problems with the Samsung i760 such as the lack of a cradle (it must be purchased separately) and the fact that the USB cable doesn't charge the phone, it's still a decent alternative to pick up.

Sidekicks get fashionable makeover

Sidekicks get fashionable makeover
The T-Mobile Sidekick is an iconic messaging phone, and its profile is further elevated as T-Mobile invited 11 designers to give the Sidekick 3 a thorough makeover. Who's who of the fashion world were invited, including Betsey Johnson, Diane von Furstenberg and Tommy Hilfiger. Their results are somewhat like their clothing line - some of them were drop dead gorgeous while the others looked like something even a 5 year old would think as ugly. All these phones were sold off in eBay auctions, where Reed Karkoff's entry for Coach fetched the highest bid at $1,009 while David Neville and Marcus Wainwright's design for Rag & Bone stood at the opposite end of the spectrum, raising a mere $212.50 in bids.

The keys are large enough for convenient and quick dialing, while other features include a 2.6" OLED display, the customary 2 megapixel camera with autofocus, and a microSD memory card slot for expansion options. The INFOBAR 2 is tipped to be released this November in red, green, beige and silver colors.

Samsung SGH-i550 announced officially

Samsung SGH-i550 announced officially
There is nothing quite like an official announcement to disperse all rumors, and the Samsung SGH-i550 is beneficiary of such an announcement. We now know that the i550 will come with integrated GPS, a 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera, HSDPA connectivity, and a 3.5mm audio jack that pits it against the Nokia N95, although it will surely lose out in the digital camera segment. This smartphone is powered by the S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1 (Symbian OS 9.2) that comes with the second version of the S60 browser, boasting Flash Lite 2.0 support and a variety of UI refinements. The integrated GPS function will be a key feature, although any accompanying software has yet to be confirmed. Other features include a 2.6" QVGA display, an FM radio, and a microSDHC memory card slot. The Samsung SGH-i550 will be released this November and has a speculated price tag of €400 before taxes and subsidies.
