W100 wristwatch phone

W100 wristwatch phone
Qiao Xing Mobile from China has just announced the launch of the W100 wristwatch cellphone, bringing your Dick Tracy fantasy to life. Admittedly, the idea of stepping into Dick Tracy's shoes more than a decade ago was more appealing then than it is today. Features of the W100 aren't out of the ordinary, featuring a 65k TFT LCD touchscreen display, 1GB of internal memory, and an integrated FM radio. The inclusion of a 1.3 megapixel camera comes as a pleasant surprise though. Pricing details are unknown, but the W100 will make its debut in store shelves this September.

FCC approves 2 new iDEN phones

FCC approves 2 new iDEN phones
The FCC has finally given their nod of approval to a couple of entry level iDEN handsets, namely the i290 and the i425. Both are slim candybar handsets that share a rather similar style, although the design cues and screen types do differ by a bit. Both handsets are based on a similar platform as the i335. It is most likely that the i295 will be available from sprint, while the i425 will make its debut over at Boost, where the latter will feature a dedicated web access key and voicemail indicator. There is no word on pricing nor availability, but rumor has it Boost might launch this iDEN model or shift completely to the unlimited CDMA calling plan.

Firefly cellphone redesign

Firefly cellphone redesign
The original Firefly cellphone was designed especially for kids, but it could not do anything more than give mom and dad a call. Firefly Mobile has filed a design for approval from the FCC, and should this application be successful, we could see a totally different Firefly cellphone. For starters, the W100 comes with a touch-sensitive area that changes dynamically according to the task at hand. Whenever you want to make a phone call, it will feature a numeric keypad, but changes to directional arrows whenever you fire up a game. Features include a camera and support for audio and video playback. There is no word on availability or pricing as at press time.

Motorola W490 to be released

Motorola W490 to be released

Motorola will be releasing the W490 in the near future, and this clamshell handset definitely looks very much like the W385. Despite offering the same styling cues as the sleek KRZR, don't expect the W490 to come with all the bells and whistles associated with high end handsets. To prove a point, the W490 lacks Bluetooth connectivity and a camera, but it will come with music playback capability, picture messaging support, various applications, and support for T-Mobile's myFaves service. The W490 is tipped to be released this September 24th, although pricing details are currently unavailable.

iPhone gets e-book reader

iPhone gets e-book reader
Apple's iPhone might come with a slew of bells and whistles, but it is surprising to note that it lacked an e-book reader - until now, that is. This is not an officially sanctioned piece of software, but it is a labor of love from a homebrew programmer. The iPhone e-book reader is compatible with HTML and text files residing in your Media/e-books folder, supporting subdirectories as well to make it easy for those who love organizing their items in a slew of different folders. Currently, synching e-books to your iPhone require you to go through iPHUC and a shell script. For those who want to check out this homebrew application, you can download it here. Be warned that it is not authorized by Apple.

Phone patent follows Spidey

Phone patent follows Spidey
You know how Spiderman shoots webs by pressing down on the inside of their palm using both middle and ring fingers? This phone patent requires you to perform the same action, but don't expect any webs to come out of this. Instead, your clamshell handset will automatically slide up towards your palm, flipping open in the process to help you attend to an incoming call in a flash. Sounds like a pretty cool idea at first, but upon further reflection nobody would want to wear a cellphone around their wrist all the time, would they? Not especially when the temptation to pose like Spiderman is so great whenever there is an incoming , making you a fool of yourself while wearing a business suit.
