Picasso now on cellphones

Picasso now on cellphones

Looks like the great art maestro Picasso has a cellphone made after his artistic style, courtesy of GPLUS in Taiwan. The Picasso GF901 is the handset in question, running on a GSM dual band network. This clamshell handset features a hidden OLED screen on its exterior which is used to display text info, while the interior 1.8" display (176 x 220 resolution) shows off special Picasso art wallpapers and screensaver for your delight. Navigation and shortcut buttons have been fashioned after a palette, with different colors adorning each button. Other features include a 1.3 megapixel camera, a microSD slot, audio and video playback, and a 1.3 megapixel camera. Would you like to pick up one of these Stateside?

Sony Ericsson announces red K810

Sony Ericsson announces red K810
The Sony Ericsson K810 which has already been available for some time now will soon be graced with the presence of another color. Currently available in Noble Blue and Golden Ivory, consumers now have the choice of a Red variant when it hits store shelves this September. Only the sides and back will be red in color as the facial side retains its darker color to make this repainted handset suitable for either gender. Would you pick up a cellphone just because of its color? I know Nintendo fans collect DS Lites of all colors, but those are cheaper than a cellphone in the first place.

Samsung SGH-D888 given FCC nod

Samsung SGH-D888 given FCC nod
If you're a big fan of Samsung handsets, you'll be pleased to know that the FCC has already approved the Samsung SGH-D888 handset. This is a GSM/EDGE phone that will ship with Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity complete with enhanced data rates, but unfortunately that's the only snippet of information we have regarding this handset. Other details that will surely be of interest to everyone else including specifications, price, and availability are unknown so you'll just have to keep your eyes peeled on this space.

LG KC1 presented in Korea

LG KC1 presented in Korea
Koreans have yet more reason to rejoice with LG dropping the KC1 handset. This is a Mobile Wimax-compatible cellphone and comes with a 2.8" touchscreen design, a 2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth connectivity, DMB functionality, and a microSD memory card slot should you exhaust the 512MB internal memory. Not only that, the LG KC1 makes a pretty decent portable media player of its own, supporting the more famous audio and video formats that are currently available. Unfortunately, the LG KC1 still clings on to the archaic Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system instead of moving on to Windows Mobile 6.0. There is no word on pricing as at press time.

Motorola unveils half dozen phones

Motorola unveils half dozen phones
Motorola has just flooded the cellphone market with images of six unannounced handsets that take on the traditional candybar form factor. Specifications and other details are still unknown, although they surely won't differ too much from each other. To date, only the model numbers are known and they are the Motorola W206, W213, W156, W160, W175 and W18. Since a couple of these will come with monochrome displays, you can be sure that they target the extremely basic, low-end market. If you're hankering after a 5 megapixel camera, GPS navigation, and 3G connectivity, these handsets are not up your alley.

Nokia 3500 Classic gains FCC approval

Nokia 3500 Classic gains FCC approval
The FCC has just approved the Nokia 3500 Classic cellphone, giving consumers yet another headache when choosing an entry-level handset. While it targets the lower end segment of the market, Nokia has certainly done their best to include mid-range features such as a microSD memory card slot for expansion options, a POP3/IMAP4 email client, Bluetooth and PictBridge connectivity, a miniUSB connector, and a 2 megapixel camera. If you're interested in picking this up, it ought to retail for €135 before taxes and subsidies when it is finally available Stateside.

Samsung releases U708 cellphone

Samsung releases U708 cellphone
Samsung has taken the opportunity this summer to unveil the U708 handset that measures a mere 12.1mm in thickness despite cramming in a fair amount of features and functions. The sliding design might be a wee bit complicated, but with such a slim dimension, slipping it in and out of your pocket shouldn't be a problem. Heat sensitive keys are used here, so those who love tactile feedback are going to be disappointed. The material used to construct the U708 makes it a fingerprint magnet though. Other features of the U708 includes a 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus and HSDPA connectivity. No word on how much the U708 will cost, but it surely ranks as one of the higher end handsets.

Mio A501 now available

Mio A501 now available
Mio Technology has just launched the A501 smartphone that packs in a SiRFStar III GPS chipset for navigation purposes, along with maps of 22 European countries and thousands upon thousands of Points of Interest. It is disappointing that Mio has not included Windows Mobile 6.0 with the A501, instead prefering to run on Windows Mobile 5.0. Connectivity options stop at EDGE, so the lack of 3G is yet another downside to the A501. A 2 megapixel camera with flash and an SD/MMC memory card slot rounds off the list of features. While the Mio A501 claims to bring GPS navigation to everyday folk like you and I, I can't help but be skeptical especially with an asking price of £339.99. What do you think?

Casio hits 5 megapixels with phone

Casio hits 5 megapixels with phone

Looks like the megapixel race for top cellphone models currently stands at 5 megapixels, and the Casio EXILIM W53CA is the latest to join the club. This clamshell cellphone features a 5.1 megapixel camera with autofocus, an electronic dictionary function, image stabilization technology, and a microSD memory card slot to store all your favorite memories. Too bad this CDMA 1X WIN handset will be launched in Korea and remain an exclusive there. Pricing details have yet to be determined, but it will come in red, black, and silver colors.

Concept phones from AU

Concept phones from AU
AU of Japan, the second largest operator in the Land of the Rising Sun, has just unveiled a bunch of concept phone designs. Being the first company to introduce sweet looking handsets in the market there, AU has since come a long way, always careful to strike a balance between form and function in their offerings. Some of these concepts come with a brush drawing displayed in the background of the user interface which is guaranteed to announce its Japanese ancestry at first glance. Will we ever see these concepts made available on store shelves? That question can only be answered by the top brass at AU, and a positive remark would make the world a better place. Call me shallow, but I want something that I use everyday to look good and perform even better.

NEC N704iµ has unique design

NEC N704iµ has unique design

NEC has lifted the veil off its N704iµ handset, touted to be the slimmest clamshell WCDMA cellphone in the world. Measurements stand at 10cm x 5cm x 1cm and it tips the scales at 90 grams. It might be rather large compared to other handsets, but it boasts a stereoscopic fascia that certainly adds to the sex appeal of this handset. Standby time is rated at 690 hours while talktime and video calling time stands at 200 minutes and 135 minutes respectively, although those quoted figures will probably be lower in real life usage. A 240 x 345 pixel LCD display graces the handset, while a VGA camera is located in front for video calls and a 1.3 megapixel camera behind for impromptu snapshots. Ultra thin speakers and a microSD memory card slot rounds off the list of features. NEC will release the N704iµ in Japan at the moment, with no word on making it available elsewhere at the moment.
